Top 5 Beautiful Memories from Varkala: Cliffs, Waves & a Short Trek That Stole the Show

Some places don’t scream for attention—they simply whisper you in. Varkala, tucked along Kerala’s coastline, is one such calm miracle. It’s not just a beach town; it’s a mood, a rhythm, a slow breath you didn’t know you needed.

When I arrived, I didn’t have a grand plan. No checklist, no rush. Just the sea, the cliffs, and a sense of curiosity that led me into one of my most peaceful travel days.

A Beach Town Built on a Cliff

Unlike most beaches in India, Varkala surprises you—the sea isn’t right in front of the road. Instead, towering cliffs stretch along the coastline, and the beach rests below like a shimmering secret.

From the top, the Arabian Sea looked endless. The wind carried the smell of salt and seafood grills, and cafes lined the cliffside with colorful boards offering:

✔ Pancakes
✔ Momos
Kerala meals
✔ Fresh juices

It felt like a coastal backpacking hub—easygoing, international, and warm.

My Mini Trek Along the Varkala Cliff

What started as a casual walk turned into a small but refreshing trekking experience. The path along the cliff wasn’t steep or intense—but it was just adventurous enough to make my heart race in the best way.

The Trekking Highlights:

✅ A narrow trail hugging the cliff edge
✅ Waves crashing far below like a soundtrack
✅ Rocky patches mixed with sandy stretches
✅ Palm trees leaning dramatically towards the sea

Sometimes I walked on proper pathways, sometimes on rugged, uneven patches. The terrain kept changing, making it feel like a real, raw coastal trek—even though it was short.

Every few meters, the view changed—from turquoise waves to red cliffs to hidden beaches. I stopped often—not because I was tired, but because the scenery wouldn’t let me move on quickly.

A View That Makes You Pause

There was a moment—midway through the trail—where I looked down and saw the beach from directly above. People were tiny dots, waves rolled in perfect white lines, and the wind felt cooler.

It wasn’t a mountaintop, but it gave me that same feeling—a quiet victory.

A small trek, a big reward.

Down to the Beach

Eventually, a sloping pathway led down to the sand. The beach felt completely different from the cliff:

✔ Softer sounds
✔ Warmer breeze
✔ Water touching your feet instead of your eyes

I sat there, letting the waves wash away the dust from my little trek. Children played, surfers waited for waves, and coconut vendors smiled like they had all the time in the world.

Simple Food, Great Mood

Varkala is filled with small shacks and cafes. I tried something simple—a plate of Kerala-style meals and a fresh lime soda. Nothing fancy, yet it tasted perfect after the walk.

Local vendors sold:

✔ Pineapple slices
✔ Tea and biscuits
✔ Seashell souvenirs

It felt authentic—no tourist pressure, no rush.

The Cliffside Vibe

As evening approached, fairy lights lit up the cliffside. Cafes started live music, travelers chatted in different languages, and the sky slowly turned pink.

From above, the beach sparkled like a postcard.

What Varkala Taught Me

You don’t have to climb a mountain to feel accomplished.
You don’t need a long trek to feel alive.
Sometimes, even a small trail can make you reconnect—with nature, with silence, with yourself.

Varkala isn’t loud. It’s gentle.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what the soul needs.

If You’re Visiting Varkala

  • Wear good sandals for the cliff walk
  • Carry water (the sun gets real!)
  • Watch your step on rocky patches
  • Don’t rush—enjoy the views
  • Sunset from the cliff is a must

Personal Reflections

My Varkala trip wasn’t about how far I trekked.
It was about how deeply I felt the journey.

A small trek.
A mighty ocean.
And a heart full of calm.

Sometimes, that’s the best kind of travel story.
