During my recent trip to Vadodara, I had the pleasure of visiting the Sayaji Baug Zoo, also known as Kamati Baug Zoo. Nestled within the expansive Sayaji Baug, one of Western India’s largest public gardens, this zoo offers a delightful blend of nature, wildlife, and family-friendly attractions.

🐾 A Glimpse into the Zoo’s Rich History
Established in 1879 by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the zoo is part of a 113-acre complex that includes a museum, planetarium, and a toy train. The zoo itself spans approximately 15 hectares and is home to a diverse range of animals and birds, making it a significant site for both botanical and zoological studies.

The zoo houses over 1,000 animals, including species such as lions, tigers, leopards, deer, and various primates. Additionally, it features 122 species of birds, including the blue-crowned pigeon, and 10 types of reptiles, such as alligators and gharials. An aquarium containing 45 species of fish was added to the zoo in 1962.

Considering the current weather in Vadodara, with temperatures soaring above 40°C, it’s advisable to plan your visit during the early morning or late afternoon hours to avoid the midday heat. The lush greenery and shaded areas within the zoo provide some respite from the sun.
🗺️ How to Reach
The zoo is conveniently located near Kala Ghoda Chowk, approximately 1 km from the Vadodara Railway Station. Auto-rickshaws and local buses frequently ply the route, making it easily accessible for visitors.
