Sathanur Dam marked the start of a completely different Day 3. After two days filled with temples, trekking, and exploring the spiritual corners of Thiruvannamalai, I wanted something calm, scenic, and a little adventurous. So I headed to the nearby Sathanur Dam, one of the most popular picnic spots in the region.
What awaited me was a beautiful mix of long walks, stunning viewpoints, gardens, water bodies, wildlife surprises, and plenty of small local experiences that completed the day.

Getting to Sathanur Dam from Thiruvannamalai
I started early in the morning from Thiruvannamalai and caught a local bus heading towards Sathanur. The journey took me through quiet villages, coconut groves, and farmlands. The moment the bus reached the Sathanur Dam stop, the calmness of nature instantly took over.
From the bus stand, the walk to the main entrance of the dam begins—and yes, it’s a bit long.
The Long Walk from Bus Stand to the Dam Top
The distance from the Sathanur Dam bus stand to the dam top is quite noticeable. It took me around 15–20 minutes of steady walking, moving along the internal roads lined with trees and small vendors.
The walk is peaceful, but under the sun, it can feel tiring—however, the anticipation of the dam views keeps you moving.
First View: The River Bridge Near the Entranc
Before even reaching the main dam, a beautiful river bridge appears near the entrance. Water flows gently beneath, surrounded by greenery on both sides. It’s the perfect spot to pause for a moment, take photos, or simply enjoy the soft breeze.
From here, the final stretch to the dam begins.
Reaching the Dam Top – Totally Worth the Walk
Once I reached the dam top, all the effort felt rewarding. The panoramic view of the vast reservoir, surrounded by distant hills, is truly breathtaking. The water stretched endlessly, shining under the sun, and the strong wind lifted the entire mood of the place.
Walking along the dam’s walkway gives you a real sense of scale—this is more than just a dam; it’s a massive piece of engineering blended with nature.
The Swimming Pool Are
One of the highlights of Sathanur Dam is the public swimming pool inside its complex. Although it was not crowded during my visit, it’s known as a popular attraction for families and children. The pool is well-maintained and located close to the beautiful gardens.
The Crocodile Bank – A Surprising Attraction
Just a few minutes from the gardens lies the small crocodile bank. It’s a contained area where you can spot crocodiles sunbathing or resting near the water. It’s both fascinating and a little intimidating to see them from such proximity.
Beautiful Parks & Lotus Ponds
Sathanur Dam isn’t just about the reservoir; it’s also home to beautifully maintained parks and botanical gardens. I walked through scenic pathways filled with:
- Green lawns
- Colorful flowers
- Shaded seating areas
- Playgrounds for kids
The lotus pond inside the garden area was incredibly photogenic. The pink lotuses floating atop green pads made the place feel peaceful and refreshing.
Small Vendors, Corn Sellers & Local Snacks
The entire area around the dam has small vendors selling snacks and refreshments. The roasted corn was especially delicious—charred, hot, and perfectly salted. You’ll also find:
- Lemon soda
- Chips
- Ice creams
- Local fruits
These little stalls add charm to the whole experience.
Monkeys – A Cute but Tricky Problem
One thing to be cautious about at Sathanur Dam is the monkeys. They roam around freely, especially near food stalls and shaded areas. While they look cute from a distance, they’re quick and not afraid to grab food from your hands or bags.
So it’s best to keep your belongings zipped and avoid feeding them.
Eateries Near the Dam
There are a few small eateries near the entrance and inside the campus. They serve basic but tasty items like:
- Dosas
- Rice varieties
- Tea
- Bajji
- Vada
Nothing fancy, but perfect for a quick bite before heading back.
Returning to Thiruvannamalai – A Satisfying End to Day 3
By evening, the wind near the dam became cooler, the water calm, and the atmosphere incredibly soothing. After spending a few more minutes enjoying the views, I walked back to the bus stand and caught a local bus back to Thiruvannamalai.
The day ended with tired legs but a refreshed mind.
