How Traveling Helped Me Recover from Depression – An Exciting Journey from Maharashtra to Kerala in 2018

Depression had engulfed my life in darkness. I felt trapped in a cycle of hopelessness, unable to break free. Seeking a way out, I decided to embark on a solo journey, hoping that the change in scenery and the thrill of new experiences might help me find the light again. This is the story of how traveling through various cities/towns/villages from Maharashtra to Kerala, helped me recover from depression.

Mumbai: The Beginning of the Journey

My journey began in Mumbai, the bustling metropolis where dreams are made and broken. As I boarded the train at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, a mix of anxiety and excitement coursed through me. The crowded local trains, the cacophony of street vendors, and the vibrant energy of the city were overwhelming, yet they sparked a flicker of curiosity within me. I spent my days exploring Marine Drive, watching the sunset over the Arabian Sea, and losing myself in the maze of Colaba’s markets. Mumbai was the perfect start, a city that mirrored my own chaos yet offered endless possibilities.

Thivim, Goa: Embracing Solitude

Next, I headed to Thivim in Goa, seeking solitude amidst its lush landscapes. The journey by train was calming, the rhythmic clatter of the wheels lulling me into a rare sense of peace. Thivim, with its quaint charm and tranquil surroundings, was a stark contrast to Mumbai. I spent my days wandering through the countryside, reconnecting with nature. The quietude allowed me to reflect and begin the slow process of healing.

Vasco and Dabolim: A Brush with Adventure

From Thivim, I traveled to Vasco da Gama and then to Dabolim. In Vasco, I met a group of backpackers at a local café who invited me to join them for a trek to the nearby hills. It was the first time in months that I felt a sense of camaraderie and adventure. Dabolim, with its beautiful beaches, offered a perfect respite. I spent my evenings at Bogmallo Beach, watching the waves crash against the shore, the sound soothing my frayed nerves.

Calangute and Baga: Finding Joy in the Crowd

Calangute and Baga, two of Goa’s most famous beaches, were next on my itinerary. The energy of these places was infectious. I joined beach parties, danced under the stars, and even tried jetty ride. The thrill of new experiences and the warmth of the people I met began to chip away at my depression. The beach parties at Baga, with their pulsating music and vibrant crowds, reminded me of the joys of living in the moment.

Miramar and Panjim: Cultural Immersion

In Miramar and Panjim, I immersed myself in Goa’s rich culture. Panjim’s Latin Quarter, with its colorful houses and narrow streets, transported me to another world. I visited the local markets, tried Goan cuisine, and even attended a traditional music concert. The highlight was a party on a Panjim cruise, where I danced the night away with strangers who felt like friends. The sense of belonging I experienced was a balm to my weary soul.

Dona Paula and Collem: Connecting with Nature

Dona Paula, with its stunning viewpoints and serene atmosphere, was a place of introspection. I spent hours sitting by the sea, letting the tranquility wash over me. From there, I traveled to Collem and Mollem, home to the famous Dudhsagar Waterfalls. The trek to the falls was challenging but invigorating. The sight of the cascading water, surrounded by lush greenery, was a powerful reminder of nature’s beauty and resilience. It mirrored the strength I was slowly rediscovering within myself.

Mapusa and Margao: Embracing Community

In Mapusa and Margao, I experienced the warmth of the Goan community. I stayed with a local family who welcomed me with open arms. Their hospitality and kindness were overwhelming. I participated in local festivals, helped with daily chores, and learned to cook Goan dishes. The sense of community and belonging I found in these towns was healing. It reminded me that I was not alone in my struggles.

Gokarna: A Spiritual Retreat

Leaving Goa, I headed to Gokarna via road, a small coastal town in Karnataka known for its temples and pristine beaches. Gokarna was a spiritual retreat. I visited the Mahabaleshwar Temple, meditated on the beaches, and practiced yoga with other travelers. The town’s spiritual aura and the simplicity of life there helped me reconnect with my inner self. The peace I found in Gokarna was a significant step in my recovery.

Honnavar, Karwar, and Murudeshwar: Coastal Adventures

From Gokarna, I traveled to Honnavar, Karwar, and Murudeshwar, exploring the coastal beauty of Karnataka. Each place had its unique charm.

In Honnavar, I took a boat ride on the Sharavathi River, marveling at the lush surroundings and ended the day with a stroll on the beautiful and environment friendly, Eco Beach.

Karwar, with its serene beaches and historical sites, offered a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.

Murudeshwar, famous for its towering Shiva statue, was a place of awe and reverence. The coastal adventures, coupled with the warmth of the locals, continued to uplift my spirits.

Udupi and Mangalore: Culinary Delights

Next, I visited Udupi and Mangalore, known for their delicious cuisine. In Udupi, I relished the famous Udupi thali, a feast of flavors that tantalized my taste buds.

Mangalore, with its seafood delicacies, was a culinary delight. I joined a local cooking class, learning to prepare traditional dishes. The joy of cooking and sharing meals with new friends was therapeutic. Food became a bridge to connect with people and cultures, enriching my travel experience.

In the evening, I took a ferry ride to Tannirbhavi Beach to enjoy the sunset and relax for the day.

Thiruvananthapuram: A Historical Journey

Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, was a blend of history and modernity. I visited the iconic Padmanabhaswamy Temple, explored the Napier Museum, and wandered through the bustling streets. The city’s rich history and vibrant culture fascinated me. I met fellow travelers at a local hostel, and together we explored the city’s hidden gems. The shared experiences and the sense of discovery were rejuvenating.

Varkala and Kovalam: The Healing Sea for Depression

My journey culminated in Varkala and Kovalam, two of Kerala’s most beautiful beach destinations. Varkala’s cliffside views and serene beaches were a perfect place for reflection. I spent my days walking along the cliffs, practicing yoga, and watching the sunset. The tranquility of Varkala was healing.

In Kovalam, I indulged in Ayurvedic massages and treatments, which further helped in alleviating my stress and anxiety. The sea, with its rhythmic waves and endless horizon, became a symbol of my healing journey.

The Journey Itself: A Path to Healing

The journey itself, encompassing train rides, bus journeys, hitchhiking, and long walks, was integral to my recovery. The train journeys, with their scenic views and the rhythmic sound of the tracks, provided moments of introspection. Hitchhiking and bus rides introduced me to countless strangers, each with their stories and kindness. Walking through new towns and cities, I discovered the joy of simple pleasures and the beauty of everyday life.

Meeting People: The Human Connection

Meeting new people, both locals and fellow travelers, was one of the most enriching aspects of my journey. From the backpackers in Vasco to the local family in Margao, each encounter brought new perspectives and friendships. The kindness and generosity of strangers reminded me of the goodness in the world. Sharing stories, laughter, and experiences with people from different backgrounds helped me feel connected and understood.

Reflection and Growth

As I traveled from Mumbai to Kerala, each place, each person, and each experience contributed to my healing. The journey was not just about exploring new destinations but also about exploring myself. I learned to embrace uncertainty, find joy in small moments, and connect with others. The diverse landscapes, from bustling cities to tranquil beaches, mirrored the highs and lows of my recovery journey.

Traveling helped me rediscover my strength, resilience, and passion for life. It taught me that healing is not a linear process but a journey of self-discovery and growth. As I watched the sunset over the Arabian Sea in Kovalam, I realized that I had come a long way from the depths of depression. The journey had helped me find my way back to myself.
