In 2013, along with visiting Dhanushkodi, I explored Rameswaram Island, one of the most famous pilgrimage and travel destinations in Tamil Nadu, India. This temple is world-famous for its long corridors with carved pillars and its sacred water tanks, called theerthams. Pilgrims believe that a dip in these waters washes away sins. The temple is also connected to the Ramayana, as Lord Rama is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva here after the war in Lanka.
Pamban Bridge – The Gateway to Rameswaram
The journey to Rameswaram is just as memorable as the destination. The Pamban Bridge, India’s first sea bridge, connects Rameswaram Island with the mainland. It is a double bridge – one for road and the other for rail. Watching the train cross the sea bridge while the blue water sparkles below is an unforgettable sight.
Dhanushkodi – The Ghost Town by the Sea
No trip is complete without visiting Dhanushkodi, the ghost town destroyed by the 1964 cyclone. Located at the tip of the island, this is where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean. I’ve already shared my Dhanushkodi experience, but I must add – its ruins, peaceful beach, and mythological connection to the Ram Setu make it one of the must-visit places in Rameswaram.
APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial and House
Rameswaram is also the hometown of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the former President of India and “Missile Man of India.” Visiting his house-turned-museum was a special moment. The house displays his childhood memories, books, and awards. Nearby, the APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial is built beautifully and inspires visitors with his life story.
The Tall Radio Tower
One of the unique landmarks is the tall radio tower, which stands as a striking structure against the sky. While not a traditional tourist spot, it is an interesting sight that most visitors notice when exploring the island.
Other Tourist Attractions
Apart from these, there are several other places worth visiting:
- Agni Theertham – a sacred beach near the Ramanathaswamy Temple where pilgrims take holy dips.
- Kothandaramaswamy Temple – located on the way to Dhanushkodi, believed to be where Vibishana surrendered to Lord Rama.
- Vivekananda Memorial – a peaceful spot honoring Swami Vivekananda’s visit.
- Water Bird Sanctuary – a seasonal place where migratory birds visit, great for nature lovers.
Safety and Travel Tips for Rameswaram
- The best time to visit Rameswaram is from October to March, when the weather is pleasant.
- Carry water and light snacks, especially if you plan to visit Dhanushkodi.
- Respect the spiritual sites and dress modestly when entering temples.
- Avoid traveling late at night to remote areas like Dhanushkodi due to restrictions.
Final Thoughts
My 2013 visit to Rameswaram Island was a mix of spirituality, history, and natural beauty. From walking through the grand corridors of the Ramanathaswamy Temple to standing at the edge of Dhanushkodi, every moment felt special.
